Perception of psychological impact caused by noise at land transport terminals in Barquisimeto

Abstract

Noise pollution is one of the most persistent environmental problems, with underestimated psychological and social effects. In Venezuela, studies linking noise to psychological health in urban mobility spaces are limited. This study aimed to determine the degree of perceived psychological impact caused by noise in Barquisimeto's bus terminals. A field study was conducted with a quantitative approach and descriptive design, using a questionnaire structured around three indicators: noise perception; perceived psychological impact; coping measures; and perception of solutions. The sample consisted of 131 participants, distributed among transporters, workers, users, residents, and mechanics. The results show that in both terminals, noise is perceived as a disturbing factor. At the Barquisimeto Terminal, passengers and nearby residents were the most affected, while at the Simón Bolívar Central Terminal (Transbarca), mechanics were the most affected. Overall, the assessments revealed a perception of significant psychological impact, recognizing noise as a structural problem that requires prioritizing institutional and educational measures. It is concluded that prolonged exposure to noise in urban terminals generates a perception of significant psychological impact.
