The purpose of this study is to propose a strategic framework based on representation models (analogous, symbolic and physical) for the comprehensive management of civil works projects, based on the analysis of a case applied in a housing development. The research is developed from a quantitative approach, supported by documentary analysis and as a case study strategy with the systematic review of technical experiences applied to housing construction projects. Based on examples, as well as detailed analyses, the practical usefulness of models at different stages of the project life cycle is examined, from conception and planning to execution and monitoring. The results show that the incorporation of models (analogous, symbolic and physical) provides a systematic framework to describe, understand, explain and anticipate the behavior of projects, consolidating itself as a strategic component for the successful development of civil works.
